R and M Brushes a Solid Starting Point

When you are starting out in makeup artistry or just testing the water creating looks on your own brushes are a real bonus in your arsenal. R & M brushes are the perfect starting point: cost-effective and high quality. Yes, I do have them in my working kit and I will be adding more.

A 10 piece essential kit, makes an ideal gift for a makeup student or enthusiast giving you all the basic tools to create without breaking the bank. Aesthetically simple with black handles and a silver Ferrel, the brushes have a clean and practical look that is perfect for a professional kit. Luxury doesn’t need to cost the earth when it comes to brushes and R & M have given us a range that proves this with ease.

R & M blush brush 532

The company behind the brushes is playing smart giving us a selection that is professionally oriented and allows you to build a working kit without hassle, standing tall in this are some elite brushes such as the 532 precise cheek brush (I personally own this brush), soft but still firm enough to give a precise application they are ideal for cream blush or contour, a sculpting brush so to speak.

Another factor that caught my attention is the array of blending and multi-purpose brushes like the 569 brush, they offer which for me is a major plus as I can just grab the brush and work without thinking too hard about what I am doing and allows me to just get on with being creative.

*it is also worth checking out the other elements such as the brush bag and magnetic palettes which allow you to buy single blush and shadow and create your own color story.

Elysium Brushes An Interesting Little Find

As a makeup artist, brushes are a tool we cannot scrimp on as they are the backbone of our work.  When I came across the Elysium range I admit to being intrigued and decided to look at them a little more closely.

“The brand name ELYSIUM is an ancient Greek composition of Heaven and Infinity. It symbolises the enlightenment of a human soul.”

A fascinating start to the brand the brushes themselves are developed and made in Italy to all the exacting standards you would expect from a country known for the quality of its skincare, cosmetics and of course clothing.

Standing tall in the market the ethical brand has a total of 8 brushes: 4 for the face, and 4 for the eyes. That is a solidity to the design, as you would expect for a professional-grade brush with the bonus of being synthetic making them suitable for all users.

The beautifully constructed brushes give a visible sense of solidity that is required of a brush without losing any of the aesthetic beauty that makes them as much a display piece as they are a practical tool.

On a personal level, there are two distinct standouts in the face range: Jada (foundation) and Yori (sculpting blush).  On the surface, they are perfectly styled and shaped to perform and in line with current trends for styling on a face brush but it’s the extra details of the bristles with their two-tone effect and the tactile look of the handle/Ferrell in black that set them apart in the market.

From the eye collection, the Nuri (blending) and Alva (shadow) look’s to all intents and purpose like the premium end of the goat hair range but are in fact synthetic, beautifully detailed and again, with that solidity of construction that speaks of Italy.

Special mention must, of course, go to the Paci brush (limited edition) not only for its unique design and shape but overall use, aimed to be a concealer brush, the precision tip allows you to add details such as high light to key areas of the face with ease.   Another plus of this particular brush is that the team is going to donate $15 to the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation for each Paci Brush sold, making it a worthwhile addition to a kit and supporting breast cancer sufferers.

With all this in mind, it is easy then to see these gracing the kits of a fashion or bridal artist, as easily at home at fashion week as a dressing table, the elegance of design and practicality these brushes bring are in essence a beauty artists dream.

Bespoke London a Fresh Approach to Mens Scent

When I came across the Bespoke London range I bought it to try it based on price and admit that I am now hooked and find myself reaching for the body spray on a regular basis with the corresponding aftershave as an extra touch. A simple, clean collection that inspires and evokes images of masculinity and solidity, it is for me the perfect accessory to the Lost Boys concept as well as being an affordable luxury that will round out a man’s grooming routine with a solidity and strength that has to be appreciated.

Bespoke London

On first glance, we see simple, clean packaging that has a minimalist edge, that is for me, uniquely male. the collection consists of 4 distinct scents and each has its own colored package to suit and is again subdivided into two camps: warm woods with exotic undertones (mature) that draw you into its exoticism and then the citrus and wild herbs, warmer and softer undertones that are both masculine and approachable (youthful).

Adding a touch of personality to the individual items that allow you to create a uniformity of scent without overpowering the wearer. An uncompromisingly simple range, Bespoke London is everything I want and more from an aftershave at a price that is accessible for daily use and fits my requirements on occasions when that extra edge is needed. A perfect antidote the overly complex world we live.

Looking at the packaging it has all the hallmarks of quality you would expect in a much more expensive range without losing any of the quality. The aftershave bottle is a prime example of this the frosted glass bottle feels solid in the hand and has the same clean symmetry that is synonymous with the Bespoke London range. Across the board, we see a cohesiveness that is both reassuring and pleasant, with weight and tactility that when handled feels right regardless of the item, the strong block colors and strong typography of the labeling all add to that sense of utilitarian luxury that men’s grooming is known for.

For me, the collection as a whole has a sense of affordable luxury, the body sprays, aftershave, and Eau Fraiche are all designed to suit the men’s grooming market and give an accessible, affordable range that will stand up to the rigors of most men’s lives giving an air of confidence. The overall feel of the range is that it is designed to suit everyday use without being overpowering and still with a masculine touch. Cleverly done and deserving of applause.

Exclusive to Superdrug, it is a clever strategy and with wide availability in their stores, the range is worth attention as it sits squarely and rightly alongside its more expensive designer counterparts and is a brand that has filled a niche that in my opinion was long overdue an overhaul giving it a fresh, strong and important place in the market for men’s grooming products.

The Advantage of Digital Media with HOD TV

HOD TV is a service that I find myself fully behind, as a huge fan of horror and thriller and with plans to create work around this in 2020, this is something I can see being a positive move and the team have made huge strides in a short time giving the market something fresh (and a little dark) that will change how we view indie film. From a (lost) creative stance this is a perfect avenue for us to explore.

Part of this will be taking our partner concept of The Lost Creatives forward and setting things in motion with our other partners (more on this soon). Our primary focus will be on horror and thriller projects for commercial sale.

There is something about being scared that really appeals to people and the team behind HOD TV really tapped into this with a kind of glee and business savvy that I can appreciate and it has opened my eyes to the potential of being a part of the film industry again this time on my own terms as a filmmaker and makeup artist. Moving forward we are not just looking at the potential of this market for ourselves but for our fellow artists and creators.

HOD TV and The Lost Concept

When we started the Lost Project we had a very definitive vision in mind. That still stands but we are going adding to that narrative and building something bigger alongside our partners with plans in motion to expand on the creative process we have alongside the narrative we have currently running.

HOD TV and The Lost Concept

Our plan has always been to go down the production route creating TV and Film projects under the Lost banner. The Lost Project is still at the heart of this and we are now building something more in the background with The Lost Creatives being our collective name for the team members.

HOD TV when we found out about it, was an ideal fit for the biggest part of our vision. We all love Horror, thriller and dark movies. The creative process for this type of project is something we are all passionate about and finding that the team behind the HOD TV concept were focusing on this we immediately opened up a dialogue with them and we are now partners to the service (and very proud of it).

Over the course of September we will be launching our new site for Lost Creatives and revealing more of our plans for the future which will include: short films for the festival circuit to advance our company name, TV series, a feature film. We will of course be making full use of the Amazing brands and companies who have supported us to date such as Oh My Lash and brushwork cosmetics (promo code JamesC) . Stay tuned for more of the brands we use in our work and new names you need to look at…..

Additionally, we are planning to add more to our out of the box kit including Titanic FX brushes and some of the hurt boxes by Brian Kinney to augment our character alongside premade pieces from Buy and Apply (Aka Nimba Creations).

*We will be working to support British brands as much as we can no matter where we decide to shoot our projects.

Fight Acne and Skin Flare-Ups with Kyushi Kindness

Designed to augment your skin care routine and as a oil based treatment system the Kyushi range is a welcome development for those with problem skin or who are prone to flare ups, adding a touch of Eastern culture to your routine. Known throughout the world for their innovations in the beauty market, Eastern medicines and skincare Kyushi (pronounced Key you see) takes all the benefits of the East and brings it to the west thanks to makeup artist Alice Moore who’s gender free skincare line is already making waves in the market of treatment based skincare.

“Kyūshi – Is a Japanese word meaning ‘pause’. Its deeper meaning is influenced by the Japanese culture of focusing on one action at a time and giving it your absolute full attention, Kyūshi establishes a ritual, a moment of peace in a world of chaos.”

For many people when their skin is going through a rough patch, whether that's acne, congestion or inflammation, the first response is to go on the "attack" with harsh scrubs, drying products and chemical spot creams. However, this can aggravate the skin and damage the barrier function, worsening the issue. It may seem counterproductive, but the best way to fight acne and skin flare-ups is with...kindness.

Kyushi Face Oil Duo Set

Kyushi Chamomile & Helichrysum (30ml - £39) is a calming, soothing and reparative facial oil blend that benefits both the skin and mind, working to nourish and hydrate the skin, whilst reducing inflammation and easing irritation from skin flare ups including acne, rosacea and eczema.

  • Anti-inflammatory German Chamomile essential oil works to soothe inflamed, irritated, red skin whilst anti-microbial essential oil Helichrysum helps to regenerate collagen whilst stimulating new tissue growth

  • 100% pure olive Squalane oil imitates the skin's natural sebum to deeply nourish, moisturise, restore elasticity and boost cell regeneration

  • Meadowfoam oil is high in antioxidants and reinforces the skin's barrier to help lock in moisture and slow down trans-epidermal water loss

  • Power antioxidant Vitamin E helps fight free radical damage and encourage healthy cell growth

  • Bergamot and Neroli essential oils work to improve pigmentation and scarring, whilst essential oil of anti-inflammatory Frankincense heals damaged tissue

  • Balancing essential oil of Orange helps to lower stress levels which are often heightened when we're anxious about our skin

  • use in the morning, at night or whenever you're struggling skin needs a helping hand

Madame La La Bronzing Ball

The Madam La La Bronzing Ball is a quirky little product with a lot of punch. Designed to work with a wide range of skin tones it is the kind of quick fix that is a must have multi purpose product that will change your makeup and tanning game.

On first inspection we see a small pot with a clear lid revealing a warm, golden toned cream that is aesthetically pleasing. Taking off the lid we are greeted with the light perfume of coconut, strong enough to be noticed but not overpowering it does make you think tropical climes which given the tanning properties is an appropriate and welcome touch that makes the Bronzing Ball a definite must for fast and easy tanning with a touch of the tropics.

Madame La La Bronzing Ball

Madame La La Bronzing Ball

“Bronzing Ball is a 180°colour cosmetics twist-up cream bronzer for a precise glide on instant bronze – no makeup brushes needed! Bronzing Ball achieves an easy year round bronzed glow in effortless strokes – one shade suits all. Infused with Vitamin E & Coco Water hydrating properties the luminous and glimmering shade with a 180° dome applicator is easy to use for bronzing, contouring and highlighting the cheeks, lips and eyes.”

Testing the product is easy, the ball shape allows you to swipe the colour directly onto the skin with ease and it blends smoothly creating a warm even tan where applied. Minimal fuss and maximum impact when you build the colour up through layering.

*This would be a great addition to a working kit for fashion artists or anyone in the wedding sector.

From a media artist perspective this is a great little item to slip into a working kit for shoots where a touch of bronze is required or you are working TV/film/fashion projects it can be a major plus for the continuity side, quickly touching up a tan on a shoot or sculpting a models face with a few swipes of this beautiful cream verses heavy powders or ashy creams, adding depth and warmth to the face without hassle. A welcome addition to the beauty world the company deserves plaudits and applause for their innovative beauty and tanning line.

Japonesque Mens Grooming Tools

The Japoneque brand has become synonymous with high quality tools at affordable prices and the mens collection is no different. While the mainstay of the company is cosmetics and makeup brushes, mens grooming tools have become a much more openly talked about product in recent years and the fall into two distinctive camps of classic and quirky.

Japonesque Classic Barber Scissors

Japonesque Classic Barber Scissors

Japonesque for me is one of the best in this realm with their simple tools that are designed to work and styled to suit the needs of a classicist of mens grooming tools. A prime example of something that men in particular want is the grooming kit which can be slipped into a case or weekend bag for emergency situations of would sit quite happily on a bathroom shelf for when its needed. With a solid set of tools such as mini scissors and nail clippers, they are perfectly set to deal with the little details of the average man who just wants something to tidy up a moustache or trim nails.

The stand out for me though is the classic barber sheers. Matte black and with a solid build, they have a reassuring sound that is reminiscent of the traditional barber sheers. The weight and ergonomics, styling all add into the traditional look and its somewhat reassuring to hear the rasp of the scissors as they trim or cut hair.

The outstanding quality is visible across the brand and with the mens tools falling squarely into the basics of grooming you can buy from the company easily and be guaranteed that you are buying something substantial that will be with you for years.
